David Tonijuan a.k.a. ‘Handel’ is one of the top rookies on the world kitesurfing circuit, apart from being our neighbour in El Maresme (Barcelona). We asked David to tell us something about himself with his own words:
‘Everything started for me when I was a little kid, sitting on the beach watching my father fly over the water. I was too small and did not weigh enough to withstand the traction of a kite like that. When I turned 10 I was given my first kite.
I started to sail and learn how to jump, but I was never a competitive rider and I needed to progress more, so I started to attend Spanish contests, the only ones that were affordable to me. Things started to go OK for me, better than expected, and that fuelled me to keep the stoke and try to improve my level.
In 2014 I started to compete on the World Championship, attending some 10 contests, and finishing in 10th plce, which has been a great surprise for me since I did not expect achieving this success so early as a Rookie!'
David placed 4th at the 2016 World Kiteboarding League, and he keeps ripping and doing his thing all over the globe.
